The International Institute of New Jersey has appointed William Y. Fellenberg as
its new executive director. Since 1918, the Institute has been the gateway of resettlement
for hundreds of thousands of immigrants arriving in America. As it has for 87 years, the Institute opens a new
world of possibilities for immigrants by providing legal assistance on immigration and
citizenship matters, English instruction, interpreting and translation, employment
training, and individual and family counseling. Fellenberg has more than 20 years of management in not-for-profit organizations. He served as national communications director for the American Society of Designers, director of membership for the Museum of Modern Art, senior deputy director of the Montclair Art Museum, and executive director of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts. Most recently, Fellenberg worked for Avalon Bay Communities, Inc., the prominent real estate investment trust, where he was development manager for the $400-million Cooper Square Urban Renewal Project in Manhattans lower east side. We are delighted to have Mr. Fellenberg at the Institute, said Catherine Tansey, IINJs chairman of the board. He brings a wide spectrum of expertise that will facilitate our needs to strengthen the Institutes strategic planning, finance and administration, fundraising, and communications.The Institute also provides an array of services to refugees and other classes of immigrants through its Anti-Trafficking Program, Refugee School-Based Services, and Survivors of Torture. These high quality services are provided by highly trained staff of professionals and caseworkers that collectively speak more than a dozen languages. Low cost and confidential, all programs aim to accelerate each new immigrants journey to self-sufficiency. Fellenberg has also served on the volunteer boards of professional and community organizations, such as the National Music Council, the New Jersey Association of Museums, Verona Landmarks Conservation Commission, and Montclair Chamber of Commerce. He has lectured at Seton Hall and Rutgers University. Fellenberg earned a B.A. in English from Montclair State College in 1974 and graduated from Rutgers Universitys Executive MBA program in 1990. Born in Yokohama, Japan, Fellenberg has lived in New Jersey since he was five years old. He has lived in Verona since 1981. His wife, Donna, is a psychoanalyst in private practice, and his son, Miles, is a student at Verona High School.
